Smart materials and adaptive structures are those that can sense external stimuli and then respond to those stimuli by some means in real or near real-time. Piezoelectric materials, shape-memory alloys, electrostrictive materials, magnetostrictive materials, electrorheological fluids are some examples of currently available smart materials. These materials and adaptive structures are and will solve engineering problems with hitherto unachievable efficiency and provide an opportunity for new wealth creating products. Modelling, understanding, testing and using these advanced materials may make the deference between success and failure in today’s intensely scientific and industrial competitions
This conference intends to be an event in which researchers make contacts and consolidate ideas. Its focus is on exchanging new research results in the broad fields of mathematical modelling and scientific computing for smart materials and adaptive structures. This involves a multidisciplinary contribution of scientists and experts active in a variety of disciplines gathering applied mathematics, modelling, mechanics, and physics and computing algorithms, codes and methods. An interdisciplinary platform will be offered to all researchers, developers and practitioners at Nano, Micro and Macro levels.
This conference will address new developments of the theoretical and numerical modelling, characterization, identification, optimisation and control of adaptive structures and devices incorporating smart materials.
This international meeing aims to combine presentations of scientific work with both academic and real applications that focus on any of the topics of interest. The scientific quality of the submitted papers will be examined. Accepted articles will be collected and published in the Proceedings book. They must be presented by one of the authors during the congress.
